In 1950, steamers rolled out of the Norfolk & W estern Trailway's famed Roanoke shops. Fatefully, they would prove the last 4-8-4's built in America. The bullet-nosed behemoths spead signature trains such as the Powhatan Arrow along the N&W's entire 676 mile mainline often at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour. Although retired from service less than a decade, one of the gracefully "J" remained a true steam suvivor. N&W # 611 headed excursion runs as late as the mid-1990s and is currently on display at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke.
